Microsoft presents: The future of work keynote

[MUSIC] >> Hi, everyone. Thank you so much for joining me here today for Ignite 2020. I’m excited to talk to you about the future of work. I want to start by reflecting on 2020, and where we are today. We’re living through a once in a generation shift when, where, and how we work is fundamentally changing. In fact, I think we’re experiencing a year of digital transformation every month. This acceleration in my mind, marks the end of the post-industrial age. We’re entering a new era of the digitization of everything. Today, I’ll share some of the trends that are shaping the future of work and the framework for success that we’ve developed for every leader in organization to succeed amid so much change and disruption.

But before we look ahead, I think it’s also helpful to reflect on where we’ve been. Throughout history, people and their ideas have propelled society forward. We’ve definitely seen it in this moment with the global pandemic. Everywhere I look, I see amazing examples of people rising to the occasion during COVID. Let’s hear from the team at Suffolk Construction about their transformation during COVID-19. >> At Suffolk, we’re trying to redefine what is possible in the construction industry. We innovate and we happen to be master builders. We’re always pushing the limits of construction. >> Suffolk’s response to the pandemic overnight really settled around the use of Microsoft Teams. >> We’re able to communicate on a completely different level than we were before and solve problems in real time.

>> Once people realize they can be anywhere to have their meetings while working with the folks that were still on their job sites and be on video and interact and collaborate on files together, it completely changed the game. >> I think what excites me about the future is that in Teams, someone is telling me about another new innovation that is going to completely change the way that we do work. [MUSIC] >> As I talk to IT leaders and customers every day. It’s clear that the way we’re working today presents real risks and challenges. At Microsoft, we see ourselves as students of this new world of work. Now we have a unique vantage point from which to observe emerging durable trends. First, we have our own Microsoft telemetry and first-party research. Second, commission research from partners including people like Harvard and Stanford University’s, and third, the daily conversations that we have with customers, they keep our finger on the pulse of what’s changing.

Let’s take a look at what we’re learning. [MUSIC] >> Since the world shifted to remote work, research shows there are some bright spots. People cite flexibility and greater empathy for team members, 62 percent of people surveyed said they feel more empathetic toward colleagues. Now that we can all see into each other’s lives at home. On the other hand, there are concerning trends. We’re eroding the social capital built over decades over water coolers and in hallways, leading to loss of connection and feelings of isolation. People are working longer hours, leaving them feeling depleted. With the biggest increases in Teams usage outside the typical 9:00-05:00 work day and on weekends, work day length increased 17 percent in Japan, 25 percent in the US, and 45 percent in Australia. One-third of remote workers say the lack of separation between work and life is negatively impacting their well-being. More than 30 percent of information workers and first-line workers see the pandemic has somewhat or significantly increased their sense of burnout, but 70 percent of people also indicate that meditation could help decrease work-related stress. It’s clear that people want to do great work.

The big question, how can technology help? >> From this shift to remote work is that we can trust people to do their best even when no one is watching. At this moment, I feel like over the last few months, leaders have gone from worrying about whether or not people will be productive, to worrying about whether people are working in sustainable ways.

As one Fortune 50 CEO commented in a recent meeting, what keeps me up at night right now isn’t supply chain logistics or sales, it’s the well-being of my workforce. Our company lives and dies by them. You see productivity can’t just be about short-term employee output. Machines don’t create value, people do, and you can’t treat people like machines. Up to this point, technology has been focused on efficiency, and I think that’s a fallacy. A sustainable productivity for people isn’t just about efficiency. People need cycles of performance and they need cycles of recovery.

The world’s best athletes have known this for a very long time. This moment right now, and our future is all about getting the best of human ingenuity. It’s about getting the best out of our most important assets, our people. So we need technology to help us perform at our best at all times. So in this new digital age, how can technology amplify human ingenuity while balancing the needs of people? At Microsoft, that is our mission to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more.

As we’ve studied how work is changing, we’ve developed seven keys to success for every business and IT leader to empower people for this new world of work with the tools to deliver human ingenuity at scale. There’s so much richness in all of these. Today. We’re going to focus on two of them, teamwork and well-being. Underpinning this framework is technology that we believe is crucial to powering the future of work. It’s the Microsoft Graph. It underlies everything we do in Microsoft 365. In a highly distributed digital everything world rich with data, you have to be able to see and read the signals. Armed with this signal, you can do amazing things, but not capturing it means you miss out on how to help people work in sustainable ways, to be innovative, and to create new value. Think about it. Every day the people in your organization are generating enormous amounts of signal and data. With a Graph, there’s a value exchange to create on both sides of the equation for the individuals and the broader organization.

For individuals, the Graph captures and processes massive amounts of signal each day. The more you use the Graph, the more it knows about your preferences and intent and the smarter it gets, and the more you can put it to work for you. The Graph delivers personalized assistance, right within the flow of work, it analyses data, surfaces insights, and suggests actions. The Graph uses AI to augment and expand what people can uniquely do, not replace them. But the real power of the Graph is what you can then do with this signal in aggregate, in combination with your functional data across HR, sales, finance, operations, customer support, all your processes, all your people data.

Imagine for example, if you could understand how teams of people are spending their time, imagine if you could understand what distinguishes top performers. For example, learning top salespeople consistently spend 40 percent more time with customers, can help you improve overall performance. The Microsoft Graph is a powerful ally in a digital everything world. Over time it becomes your Graph, helping to create net new value for the entire organization. Microsoft 365 is the integrated suite of Graph connected productivity apps and experiences. It powers the familiar apps people rely on every day to connect, collaborate, and get work done. Microsoft Teams, Outlook, Office and the Edge browser. We’ve architected Microsoft 365 to empower people to be productive on any platform and any device. The pandemic has made the PC more essential than ever, as more than one billion users rely on Windows 10 to be productive from anywhere across work, school, and life. For more on this, you can check out Brad Anderson and Panos Panay session on how we’re innovating for customers with Windows 10 and Surface across small screens, large screens, and everything in between. Microsoft Edge offers the highest rated protection against malware and phishing. Usage of our Office apps is up across Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel and more, highlighting their critical role in helping people be productive every day.

More broadly, Microsoft 365 is a part of our differentiated approach to the Cloud. Now, let’s return to those keys for success that guide our innovation investments in Microsoft 365 and in Teams. Let’s start with re-imagining teamwork. In a digital everything world, rebuilding social capital to help people feel connected, engaged, and a part of the company culture is absolutely critical. Staying connected is about much more than just video meetings. Work happens before, during, and after a meeting, and Microsoft Teams is the platform for work. Teams is so much more than any single app where you can chat or meet. It’s a rich platform for all the ways people in teams need to work and move work forward.

It’s the only solution that combines meetings, call and chat, content collaboration with the power of Office and business process automation, all in a secure, integrated user experience. As companies move all their work online, they increasingly want one unified platform for meetings all the way to phone system, and Teams offers exactly that. Everything that happens during a Teams meeting as an example, the discussion, chat decisions, content, it’s all preserved and easy to access. So any team member can revisit it, take action, and move the work forward. But Teams doesn’t just connect people inside your organization. It also connects your people to your customers through video meetings, webinars, remote selling, supply chain, and other scenarios. So you can connect from anywhere, both internally and with external partners and customers.

Today we’re debuting new video meeting experiences in Teams, along with reimagined workspaces that treat every collaborator remote, in-person, or even on the go as a first-class citizen. I’ll now turn it over to Aya on my team to show you what these innovations look like in action. >> Thanks, Jared. Today I’m going to show you some exciting innovations designed to help facilitate teamwork for the hybrid workplace to make every worker feel a part of the team, whether they’re working remotely or in the office. The Surface Hub is an incredible device designed for meetings and collaboration in shared spaces. Earlier this month, we announced Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise on Surface Hub 2, creating a uniquely personal and productive computing experience. This lets me have a Surface Hub in my personal office and have a similar experience to what I would have on my PC. Now, I can easily sign in using my fingerprint, and now, I can enjoy all my favorite apps that I would use every day on my PC.

Let’s jump right into Microsoft Teams and get started with meetings. Teams is perfect for video meetings. I love that I can now see up to 49 people in one view. I’m sure many of you miss the in-person meetings with colleagues. I know, I do. This summer we announced a new meeting experience called Together Mode, which brings you and your team all in one shared virtual space. Now, with a single-click, it’s like we’re all sitting together in what looks like an auditorium. Now, we’re not separated by any grid lines, are without any distracting backgrounds.

>> It’s so much fun to feel like we’re altogether. We can even high five and engage with each other a bit more naturally in conversation. >> Having us together to share background actually helps us concentrate more easily. >> I find I can remember more of what was said in meetings, and I’m less tired at the end of the day. >> Together Mode helps make meetings more immersive and create a stronger human connection. We also introduced a dynamic view that adjusts the screen to prioritize what’s most important. Here, a colleague is presenting content, and I can easily pin, let’s say, the presenter or a key decision-maker or an interpreter, so I can actually see their reactions. Now, when you’re focused during a meeting and don’t have a chat window open, it’s easy to miss side conversations. But now, our new chat bubbles help me stay informed. Now, many businesses have started to implement hybrid work environments. I’d like to show you what we’re doing in Teams to help improve teamwork at the office.

I’m here in the conference room with my colleagues Alley and Alex. This conference room is configured with a Microsoft Teams Room and our newest member of the Surface family, the Microsoft Surface Hub 2S 85-inch. Now, we’re just about to get started in a meeting to discuss the addition of a production line on the manufacturing floor. Cortana, join my meeting. You’ll notice I didn’t need to touch any device to join the meeting.

With the new coordinated meetings experience with Microsoft Teams Rooms and Surface Hub, these two connected devices work together to seamlessly power a modern collaborative meeting experience. With Microsoft Teams Rooms handling the audio and video, the front of room display shows the meeting participants, while the Surface Hub automatically launches a shared digital whiteboard for brainstorming. Our latest innovation is a new category of intelligence speakers from Microsoft Teams Rooms that brings speaker attributed transcription for participants in the meeting room. This will help meetings be more inclusive for both remote and in room attendees. This also enables attendees to spend less time note-taking and easily follow along with who said what in the room. >> If we install a new line, it might actually roughly double our output. >> I think you’re right. Aya, could you bring up the photo from the last brainstorm? >> Great idea.

Now, all remote participants will see the speaker’s names appear next to the live transcription, which is accessible to all attendees during and after the meeting. The Surface Hub is certified for Teams and runs the Windows 10 app, which is optimized for meeting room experiences. As Alex suggested, let me go ahead and paste in our whiteboard photo from last session. Now, with this magic wand, I can easily convert this image into ink, which uses AI to clean up the background and extract the ink. Now, I can easily move things around. Let me go ahead and move this line a little bit lower, and now, I can add the additional third line.

Great. Now, this inking experience is magical, and the remote attendees can also interact digitally from their personal devices. Now, one of my colleagues on this call is in transit waiting for the bus. He’s using the brand new Surface Duo, which is a foldable dual screen mobile device that features the best of Microsoft 365 and can run every Android app in the Google Play Store. Now, the Surface Duo not only helps Jason focus on the meeting, but he can simultaneously stay productive on the other screen. Hey, Jason. >> Hey, Aya. >> Do you have the dimensions for the additional line? >> I sure do.

I’m going to put them right on the whiteboard here for you. >> He can use the Surface Slim Pen to ink directly on the whiteboard while maintaining full view of the meeting. >> There you go. >> Great. To wrap up the meeting, I can use the voice assistance for a touchless experience. Cortana, end my meeting. Now, all the devices in the room have disconnected from the meeting, and the content has been wiped from the Surface Hub, preparing it for its next session.

Whether you’re working from home, in the classroom or back in the office, Microsoft 365 and Teams helps you stay connected and collaborate more effectively. >> Thanks, Aya. Let’s move on to well-being. If this moment has taught us anything, it’s this. We can no longer measure human productivity by efficiency alone. If we just keep building tools to make people more and more efficient, they will inevitably burn out. I feel that, I bet we all feel that. Instead, we need to think about how we empower human ingenuity.

The same ingenuity that creates value for the organization and that only humans possess. We do that by prioritizing individual well-being. One proven way to prioritize well-being is meditation. The fantastic meditation app Headspace did a survey and found that 70 percent of all people think meditating could help them decrease their work-related stress. Today, we’re so excited to announce a new integration that brings Headspace right into Microsoft Teams. Now, I’m going to show you what that looks like in a moment. But first, I want to introduce Headspace’s co-founder and our new partner, Andy Puddicombe, one of the world’s top meditation experts.

Andy, thank you so much for taking the time to meet with me again. It’s just such a pleasure to have you here with us, and to be able to have a conversation with you that we can share. >> It’s a pleasure. Thanks for having me along. >> Meditation is something that you’ve been teaching around the world. Have you always made space for meditation within your work day? >> Yeah. I guess there’s two parts to that job. For many years as a Buddhist monk, meditation was my work, so I always make time. Since leaving then 15 years ago or so, and certainly since starting a company, meditation is being an essential part of my work day. Sometimes it’s in the morning, sometimes it’s at work, sometimes it’s in the evening. >> Because I have been researching and understanding the field. There’s this way that meditation can help with resilience and with work-related stress. Can you just tell us a little bit more about that? >> Stress in itself isn’t a bad thing.

It’s really important to say that. It’s when it happens so often and it happens for long enough that it begins to overwhelm us. Then it becomes harmful. Meditation shows us how to step out of that thinking mind. The way I think about it is more in terms of what can we do on a regular basis so that we are ready and prepared for when difficult, stressful, and challenging situations arise both at work and at home, so we actually, feel ready for that, and we’re not thrown off course or easily overwhelmed by it? >> I’m seeing a lot of stress come from the fact that there aren’t any boundaries. How does meditation help with that? >> How we live our life at work has a direct impact on how we relate to our environment and our immediate family, colleagues, housemates, whatever it might be around us. I do think scheduling becomes really, really important, so you don’t feel burned out, and it doesn’t feel the entirety of our world has come together all at the same time.

>> Wonderful. I think about the moment that we’re in right now, I think about resilience, I think about care and compassion. We have never needed it more. Andy Puddicombe, thank you so much. Thanks, Jared. >> Today we’re announcing that Insights, powered by MyAnalytics and Workplace Analytics, is also coming to Teams. Insights helps individuals, managers, and leaders prioritize well-being and increase overall productivity. Let’s take a look. I’ll start by showing you the new personal Insights designed to help people be their best and most productive selves. A virtual commute will add structure to the remote workday, carving out time to mindfully disconnect in the evening.

This will make it seamless to close out the day’s tasks or to add them to a to-do list. Emotional check-ins help people pause and reflect on how the day went and observe emotional patterns over time. Then, there’s that new integration with Headspace that Andy and I talked about. These new exciting experiences are coming in 2021. Starting in October 2020 next month, you’ll begin to see personal Insights in Teams designed to help strengthen relationships and protect time for focus work with the briefing e-mail from Cortana and Outlook. Starting in October, we’ll be bringing new Insights for managers and leaders in the Teams. Let’s start by taking a look at Manager Insights. The well-being of their teams is top of mind for managers who can often operate like a life preserver when employees are grappling with disruption and change. Powered by Workplace Analytics, new Insights for managers help them protect individual well-being and position their people to stay productive.

Supporting research and thought leadership provide additional insights on the impact of very specific work habits and behaviors, along with tips and suggestions for ways to improve management skill. Metrics for other teams of similar size and function also help to contextualize team data, and links to best practices can help managers address challenge areas. Insight into the factors that impact the day-to-day experience of their teams helps managers create a culture that enables people to do their best work while prioritizing individual well-being. Now, let’s move on to Insights for leaders. Business leaders need visibility and what’s happening with people across their organizations. New Workplace Analytics Insights in Teams show data on team cohesion and stress and disruption, along with recommendations to help strengthen social ties. Other factors like elevated levels of after hours work can lead to employee burnout, which in turn reduces productivity and increases attrition risk. Seeing where there’s risks and getting insight into other factors that impact employee engagement and productivity levels helps leaders know where they can take steps to protect employee well-being.

Leaders can also see where a process change can improve the way work happens. We are so thrilled to bring these new well-being innovations to you, and there’s so much more on the way. How to Reach Out for an Informational Interview | The Intern Hustle

Hey there! Welcome to The Intern Hustle’s hub on YouTube. I’m Jenna Rein, and in this video you’re going to learn how you should be reaching out to the people that you would like to connect with for an informational interview. ‘Cause you do want them to say yes when you reach out, right? Then stick around and take note of my 6 tips on how to reach out for an informational interview. Do you find yourself watching this and thinking “what is an informational interview?” Not to worry – I’ll cover that too. Hey there! I’m Jenna Rein from theinternhustle.com, and this is Initiative Muscle Monday. Helping you to start each week with an intentional step toward a successful future.

Let’s do this! So, what is an informational interview? In the most basic of explanations, it is an interview where the tables are turned. You are interviewing the other person and you’re asking them to share “information” with you about their career, their company, their industry, how they got their start, and lessons that they’ve learned along the way. Informational interviews are a great tool to help you determine professional fit in your own life. I have 6 tips for you today on how you should be reaching out when you request an informational interview with someone. And stick around to the end of this video for a special bonus email template that I’m going to be sharing with you.

This is a template that you’re going to be able to use when you’re sending those emails requesting your informational interviews. Alright, are you ready? Let’s dive in! Show that you’ve done your research. You want to be specific with your ask. Because people can tell when you just copy and paste an email to them that you’ve already sent to 10 other people. And I can tell you from experience, that I’m much more inclined to respond to someone when they ask me specific questions about my career, or they’re looking for specific advice. Now, it’s easy to just say I’d like to learn more about your career path. But show me that you took the time to actually research my background and that you want to know about a specific experience with a company or an individual that has shaped where I’m at today. Mention mutual connections or shared experiences. Did a family member or friend suggest that you connect with this person? Great – let them know. Or are they an alumni from the school that you attend? Make the connection.

Or, did you just read about something in their bio that you share in common with them? Maybe it’s a favorite band or place that you enjoy traveling to. These are all things that you want to incorporate when you reach out in order to establish a deeper connection up front. Make it convenient for them to say “yes”.

Suggest a phone call or offer to meet them in a location of their choice. But the amount of emails that people get today on a daily basis, it’s insane. If they’re getting an email from you and it’s not clear that you are flexible and that you’re going to make the time and the place very convenient for them, then they’re likely going to put the email aside and deal with it later. And chances are your email is going to then get lost in the depths of their inbox and you may never actually hear from them after all. So, you want to make it easy for them to give you an instant reply, and an easy one, and tell you yes. Respect their time. Informational interviews should be no more than 30 min. (20 min. is really what you’re shooting for here). This goes along with my last point on making it easy for them to say yes. Make sure that they understand that you know how busy they are and that you’re coming prepared to make this a good use of their time.

Include your availability for several dates and times. Don’t make them do the scheduling work. If you offer up a few different options that work for you on when you can meet, then they can easily check their calendar and get back to you. Or better yet, they can go hands off all together and pass it on to their assistant for all of the scheduling work. Again, how can you make it as convenient as possible for them to say “yes” to you. Close your email with a call to action to drive next steps. Guide their next action. Which should be responding to your email and the request that you’ve made for an informational interview. Say that you are looking forward to hearing from them. Ask them to let you know which of the options that you suggested works best for them. And then offer to send out a calendar invite once they confirm. If you follow these 6 tips when reaching out to request an informational interview, your chances of actually getting the interview are going to be much higher.

And you might be thinking…Why are you talking about this? You just talk about internships. But I want to help you out in whatever way I can. And it’s easier than ever to make money online. There are a lot of virtual work opportunities that do not require a degree. The online jobs that I’m sharing with, you in this video, cover many different skill sets and areas of interest. There are some good ones that you probably haven’t even heard of or considered before. You may be equipped with the knowledge and skills to start some of these online jobs today. Others may require a little bit of effort on your part to learn a new skill or to build a portfolio. But all of them are worth looking into. Remember, just approach your pursuit of online jobs with a growth mindset and patience for yourself as you learn along the way.

If you’re ready to dive in, let’s review over 15 online jobs for college students in 2020, so that you can start earning money and start adding skills to your resume. Let’s start with a couple ways to make money online that you are perfectly suited for as a college student. I am talking easy online opportunities for college students. The first one is to sell your notes online. Are you a great note-taker? Do your friends always ask to copy your notes? Then selling your notes online could be a great way for you to make some money. Check out studysoup.com and apply to be an Elite Notetaker. Earn up to $500 per course. And top performers on the StudySoup platform have been known to make as much as $2,000 in a semester. The more students that you have in your classes, the higher your earning potential. And then you can also earn additional money for referring friends to be Elite Notetakers with StudySoup as well. The next thing to check out if you are a college student, which is a super easy opportunity for you to put some money back in your pocket, is selling your used textbooks online.

Chances are you have some textbooks lying around that you’re no longer using. So why not sell them back and get some money for them? You don’t have to be selling these back to a physical bookstore on campus either. There are plenty of options online for textbook buyback. So check out sites like bookscouter.com, which sources prices from multiple book buyback sites in a matter of minutes. Then from their aggregated lists, pick the seller that you want to work with based on the price they’re offering and the seller ratings. You earn a percentage of the books original price – and this is going to vary by book, and edition, and condition and demand of course – but pro tip: sell during high demand seasons in the school year and you’re better off. And no, you’re not going to get back what you paid for it.

But at least it’s something. The book is not just sitting on a shelf collecting dust. It is putting money back in your pocket. And you can earn additional money by offering to help your lazy friends sell their used textbooks back, as well, and charge them a small commission for doing so. Alright, the next thing we’re gonna touch on is online freelance work for college students. Depending on your skills, and your time, and your hustle, there are a number of different freelance jobs that you can land as a college student. You can write articles for blogs or online media outlets, you can write copy for a website, or even write a script for a YouTube video (like this one). You can work as a freelance graphic designer and produce logos, presentations, and video graphics, or even illustrations for web design. Or, if you have web development skills, you can work as a freelance web developer and help businesses build and enhance their websites. So check out sites like Fiverr, Upwork, Thumbtack and 99designs. (Which I actually used 99designs to have the logo for The Intern Hustle designed.) And use these sites to find a variety of freelance work requests that people are posting.

Create a profile of your own, and a portfolio of your work, and then pitch yourself in order to land these freelance gigs. You can also reach out and pitch your work directly to different blogs and websites. Maybe ones that you specifically take an interest in, and you have content that you’re excited to write about. When it comes to freelance writing, many sites will have a contact section for guest contributions. So just check the website for that. Find a way to get in touch with them and pitch your writing. You earn by the hour, or a fixed fee per project, when it comes to freelance work. And this depends on the type of work and what you negotiate in the terms of your freelance statement of work. Freelance gigs can range anywhere from say $30 an hour for a graphic design project to $5,000 a project for web development. When you’re just starting out, do your research to see what average rates are and work your way up from there. Note that the popular websites I mentioned for finding freelance gigs do charge service fees, so you’re gonna want to take that into consideration when you’re setting your rates.

And you can earn more as you begin to establish a name for yourself. If you’re truly skilled in an area, and you build up a strong portfolio of work, you can make very good money freelancing while you’re in college. The next category we’re going to talk about is also sort of a freelancing opportunity, but it’s social media jobs for college students. And chances are you’re pretty active on social media already. And you’re likely pretty savvy with it. So think about how you can use your knowledge of social media to help a business, maybe a local business in your community, to establish and grow their online presence.

Again, check out sites like Fiverr, Upwork and Thumbtack, and see what types of social media tasks people are posting. Then, based on your social media strengths, craft a profile and pitch yourself for the gigs that interest you the most. You can also directly pitch local businesses in your area. So do some research on their social media accounts and then pitch them on how you can help them improve. You earn by the hour, or a fixed fee per project. And based on my research, when you’re just getting started, you can expect to earn around $20 an hour. And you can earn more by getting some quick wins for a client and then working with them to establish a retainer deal where they engage you to do a set amount of of social media work for them each month. For example: Four Instagram posts per week — and they have a set amount that they’re gonna pay you every month to do those four posts a week for them.

Moving on, we’re gonna talk about online tutoring jobs for college students. Now you don’t have to be an education major in order to get an online tutoring job as a college student. Are you strong in a particular subject? Because you may be able to tutor peers who are struggling to keep up in college, or younger students (so K-12), just by using your own subject matter expertise. Or are you bilingual? Because you can work one-on-one with people online to help them learn a language virtually just by having conversations with them. And finally, you could teach English to students from other parts of the world as well. So check out sites like tutor.com, Chegg or Wyzant for tutoring opportunities on a variety of subjects. And then check out italkie and VIPKid for online teaching opportunities that are specific to language. Now note some of these sites have age and education requirements, so do your research before you apply to make sure that you find the one you’re best suited for.

And you’ll earn typically anywhere from $9 to $25 an hour as an online tutor through these sites. And pay will vary with experience and the number of hours that you dedicate to tutoring online. Some of these sites may also take a percentage of earnings as a service fee, so make sure that you’re reading the fine print to find out what you’re actually going to be earning. And you can earn more in some cases by referring students, or other tutors, to these platforms. So we’re maybe halfway through this video, and I’ve already mentioned a lot of different online jobs and different sites that you should check out to pursue those opportunities.

I just want to throw it out there, I’m putting all of the links in the description below this video. So make sure you’re checking that if you’re interested in some of the options I’ve already shared with you. And let’s dive into the rest of the options. The next category of online jobs for college students, I have actually talked about before… in this video. I shared about different internship alternatives in this video. So if you are struggling to get an internship at the moment I give you a bunch of different options for how you can still gain experience (valuable experience) that you can put on your resume. And I shared about these short-term professional paid projects as one of the internship alternatives. And these are projects from real companies. They are tasks that are important to the company, but perhaps just not the best use of their time. And they’re short term (so usually 20 to 40 hours of work in total), and offered across a number of different departments and areas of the business.

They are a great way to gain professional experience and enhance your resume. So one site I want you to check out for this is parkerdewey.com. This is a company that connects students with employers for short-term paid assignments. And Parker Dewey likes to call these micro-internships. And they work with a variety of industries, as well as partnering with many universities, to help place students with opportunities that are a good professional fit. You can also just reach out to companies directly that you’re interested in working with and pitch yourself for short-term projects that will add value to their organization. Do your research, and identify their needs and areas where you can help them get some quick wins. But most companies right now are offering a lot of virtual opportunities for people, so it’s definitely a good thing for you to check out and just see if there are any short-term paid assignments that you can take on.

Now, you earn a per project fee. And this is going to vary depending on the company, and the nature of the work, and the length of the project. But ultimately you can earn more by doing quality work, and getting asked back by this company for future projects, or better yet, maybe down the line a part-time or full-time position with them. Alight, are you a creative? The next category I want to talk about is creative online work for college students. Specifically photography-based work. Are you talented with a camera? Or honestly, maybe just your iPhone camera? There are options for you to sell your photography online. You can sell photos that you take to brands, and small businesses, and other creatives who are seeking specific images for their digital or physical media.

Check out sites like Snapwire or miPic to sell photos or launch your own customized print store with your photos. Participate in specific photo requests or challenges, or just build your portfolio to sell to the general marketplace. You earn anywhere from fifty to a hundred percent of the photo sale price, depending on the site and the photo requests that you’re responding to. And you can earn more by participating in higher paying challenges as your photography portfolio grows. Next up, you may have some experience with this one. And it’s because a lot of people do dabble with this in different ways. I’m talking about e-commerce marketplace options for students. So have you ever purchased something from Etsy? or eBay? or maybe Poshmark? Well why not become a seller on one of those platforms instead of just a buyer? Whether you’re selling collectibles, or clothing of your own, or artwork that you made, you can build a brand for yourself and make some good money using the online marketplaces that already exist.

So check out Etsy to sell handcrafted products like artwork, maybe jewelry, decor. And use eBay to sell collectibles, books (you can even sell your textbooks on eBay), clothing, electronics, really just about anything. And then check out companies like Poshmark or thredUP to sell and consign your clothing. Some of these e-commerce marketplace sites are easier to set up than others, so make sure that you do your research and you choose what makes the most sense for you and what you’re hoping to sell. But I can say that I personally sell clothing on Poshmark, and I have made good money back on pieces that I just don’t wear or use that much anymore. So instead of just dropping everything off in a brown paper bag at Goodwill, I’m actually able to put some money back in my own pocket on clothes that I had previously invested in.

So you earn based on how you price your products and just how much you have to sell. And note that these sites will take a percentage of your sale as a service fee. You can earn more by buying items at lower than usual prices and selling them on these marketplaces for a greater profit. For example: Maybe you find a valuable antique for cheap at a garage sale, and you sell it for what it’s actually worth on Etsy.

Next up is a pretty specific one, and it’s actually online customer support work for college students. And I’m specifically talking about with Apple. So companies like Apple offer some great remote work opportunities for college students. Now it’s competitive, but it’s still a really good opportunity if you’re looking for a company name like that to have on your resume. Because no matter how small the job, it does not hurt to have Apple on your resume. So check out Apple’s job opportunities page and then use the search term Apple Support College Program. This will pull up a list of open jobs at Apple that are available to students at a variety of colleges and universities.

So you have to search to see if your school is listed, and if they’re looking for someone at your school. Read the job description and the requirements, and apply if you think you would be a good fit as a customer support representative for Apple. You earn where you learn… by working from school or from home. And per Apple, the position comes with competitive pay, eligibility to participate in their company’s stock plan, paid time off, employee product discounts and dedicated resources to support your ongoing growth and career development.

That sounds like a pretty good gig. And you can earn more by potentially qualifying for tuition reimbursement from Apple as well. Definitely one that I would look into if I were still a college student today. And the last one I’m gonna share with you today is virtual transcription service work for college students. So this is taking audio or video content and transcribing it into written form. And it’s an online job that really doesn’t have that many requirements. You need to be proficient in your spelling and your grammar, and have a good typing speed.

But a transcription job gives you a lot of flexibility when it comes to the hours that you work. You can do this in the middle of the night if you really wanted to. So check out sites like rev.com and scribie.com, for video and audio transcriber positions that you can apply to. And then choose from a variety of projects, with no limits on the amount of work that you can do. Amazon also has virtual transcription roles for their Alexa product. Another good brand name company to have on your resume, if you can get this type of a gig. Search for Data Associate, Alexa Data Services on Amazon’s career pages to find these opportunities, and make sure that you’re filtering for the work from home option when you do so. With these transcription jobs, you can earn by the minute and make anywhere from 5 to 25 dollars an hour depending on the project and how fast you are, and accurate you are, at transcribing.

And earn more money if you happen to know a foreign language and are able to translate subtitles as well. That’s it! I just shared with you over 15 different online jobs for college students in 2020. And these are a variety of ways to make money and build up your resume all from the comfort of your own home, or your own dorm room, or apartment, wherever you are. All of the different websites I mentioned in this video are linked in the description below, so make sure you check that out. Bookmark that post and revisit it as you need to. I will be sure to link to that blog post as well in the description. And before I sign off on this video, there are a couple financial tips that I would like to close with…

The first one is just a smart money pro tip for you. So if you require special software or hardware in order to do some of this work… specifically some of the freelance work, maybe like graphic design and things like that… be sure that you look into any student discounts that may be available to you first. For example, Adobe usually offers student rates for their software, and this comes in handy when you’re using their products for things like graphic design or video editing. Apple also offers student discounts on computers and other products that you may need to do the job through their education pricing program. So always do a quick Google search just to see what offers and student discounts are available to you. Because ultimately if you’re saving money on these things, that’s more money back in your pocket when you start earning.

And with all of these options, it is important that you understand how taxes will be handled. You don’t want surprises. With most freelance work, and positions where you work as an online contractor, you should receive a Form 1099-MISC from the employer for tax season. This obviously depends on how much you make and a lot of other factors, and I am NOT a tax professional. I am simply just giving you a heads up that taxes are something that you need to consider. So be sure to consult with a tax professional to ensure that you are preparing your taxes correctly and that you are setting aside enough money to pay your taxes if necessary. How to Make Your Resume Stand Out for Internships | The Intern Hustle

Hey guys, I’m Jenna Rein. And this is The Intern Hustle’s YouTube channel. I share new videos every Monday to help you flex your initiative muscle and take control of your future. In today’s video I’m sharing a few tips on how you can make your resume stand out for internships. Now if you’re new here, you may be thinking cool Jenna — Who are you and why do you know about this? Well, if you want my full story you can head over to theinternhustle.com and check it out, but the short story is I had four internships in college (a couple of which were extremely competitive to get my foot in the door at) And so I know a thing or two about how to get yourself the best shot at the internship by putting together a solid resume.

Hey there, I’m Jenna Rein from theinternhustle.com and this is Initiative Muscle Monday, helping you to start each week with an intentional step toward a successful future. Let’s do this! Now before I go into the tips, I want to start by saying… Set aside the time to work on your resume, and then do it. Your resume always takes more time than you think it will and if you want to do it right, you need to plan ahead and give yourself the time to do a quality job. Okay, Let’s break down the tips. Start by gathering relevant experiences as early as you can. If you’re still in high school or early in your college years, what jobs can you get now that will help you stand out when you’re applying for internships you want later? For example, in high school I really already had an interest in training athletes. And so no, I hadn’t applied to my major yet or taken any classes to test my interest, but it was an interest of mine and I decided to pay attention to it.

I decided to find a job in high school that would translate into relevant experience later. I ended up getting a fitness floor position at a reputable health club. Was it glamorous? No. I wiped sweat off weight machines as part of my job. But what high school job really is that glamorous? Definitely an upgrade from changing diapers while babysitting I will tell you that. But it did give me hands-on experience in a training setting, and more importantly in the future when I was applying for internships, it showed companies that I was intentional from an early age. I wasn’t just trying to check a box and get an internship. I had previous experience in this field and I was willing to put in the work. So as you work to gather this relevant experience start to create inventory of it. Keep a journal about things you learn on the job. Hard skills, like new softwares (or maybe you learned Adobe Photoshop), machine operations, or training certifications you’ve obtained. And soft skills you’ve developed like, communication, or time management, problem-solving.

Next, be sure to capture specific volunteer or extracurricular experience you have as well — specific things you’ve done in college that showcase the skills and interests that you have. And if you haven’t been documenting your experience as you go and you’re just now playing catch-up, go ahead and follow this exercise: I want you to set a timer for twenty to thirty minutes and write down any and all experience that comes to mind. Just get your juices flowing. Nothing’s stupid. This is just for your reference. You will be amazed with how much comes up as you start brainstorming and putting pen to paper. Okay. Got your experience inventory? Great! We will come back to this in a minute. Now this next point you’re gonna hear a lot, but it’s because it’s important… Imagine that? Make sure that you tailor your resume to each and every internship position that you’re applying for. Why? Because recruiters are receiving A LOT of resumes, and on average they’re only scanning your resume for about six seconds before deciding if they’re gonna move it forward to next steps or put it in the trash can.

So if you fail to speak to what a recruiter is looking for on your resume, then you can pretty much guarantee your resumes going into the trash can. Now I know if you’re applying to a lot of internships this can seem like a lot of work. Unique resumes for every application? But that’s exactly why you should take the extra time to do it. Because most of your peers aren’t. Spend a little bit more time upfront and gift yourself the wonderful benefit of out-shining your competition. Now the best way to do this is to pull up the job description for the internships you’re applying for, and the details about the company values and culture. Then pull up your experience inventory and start connecting the dots. Not all of it has to be a pure hard skill connection to what they’re looking for. You can also draw attention to other experience you have — volunteer, extracurriculars, ties into their company culture — look for parallels and craft your resume accordingly.

Be interesting and show your personality. Always start your bullet points on your resume with the most relevant accomplishments first. Now notice I said accomplishments and not responsibilities. That’s because no one cares what you were responsible for. How are they supposed to know that you actually did what you are responsible for? They want to know what you accomplished and the best way to show someone what you accomplished is by giving them concrete examples and showing them the numbers.

Quantify wherever you can. So back to my high school job as a fitness floor trainer… Maybe instead of just saying, instructed members on proper use of weightlifting machines. I could say, led an average of 15, 30-minute introduction to weightlifting sessions with club members each week. So when it comes to tailoring your resume, and creating stand out quantifiable accomplishments, I know you can do it. You just have to put in a little effort. No matter how little experience you have, it is possible So give it a try and tailor your experience. And then try harder. How the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine is transforming how students learn

[Music] by this year 2020 medical knowledge is doubling every 73 days every moment we spend with them has to be high-value we have to really be training master learners not master memorizers when we had the opportunity to build this new facility it really gave us an opportunity to rethink medical education we wanted to build a technology platform in a building that would support potentially decades of innovation in the future when you have active learning and you’re engaging their mind we know that they don’t have to study as much later so anything that you can do to make that material easier to grasp I think is really important but it was critical that we knew we were using technological tools that were perfect fits to that pedagogics eerie that educational theory and that led naturally to Microsoft our initial design in this building was actually very traditional we had monitors on the walls around the classrooms we moved away from that we pulled the technology into the room and used a surface hub to’s to really build a platform that could move throughout the building hubs can be used in a conference room they could go up to a director’s office or they could stay there and support the learning in that space the building has been designed in terms of space with lots of small group learning technology infused within those to allow for collaborating around hubs and white boards etc exactly as we envisioned the surface hub is intended for you to interact with and so that a layout of a room is completely different to encourage adoption of that technique we have an experience or learning lab on the third floor of the building where the walls can actually be moved around and you can construct whatever space you need trying to make things more engaged more active technology creates behavior and space enables behavior and so bringing those two things together to really help focus on adoption of technologies students be able to join in into a classroom experience no matter where they are how we selected Microsoft teams for that you can be in multiple small group sessions simultaneously you can be in your lab and teach you a small group it expands and leverages our faculty in a way that makes it much more efficient vision for teams really is to deliberately allow more synchronous and asynchronous learning embedded into our DNA is this concept of continuous quality improvement understanding how the human brain works and understanding how we learn more efficiently and effectively again leveraging technology being innovative is really about how do you simplify delegate to the computer world which should be delegated to the computer world and then what happens is then the human beings have the time-space energy to be doing the things that human beings are really good at [Music] you

talk about a under the radar fragrance guys i did an unboxing for you guys i think about a week ago  i did some voting i you know posted something in the community here on youtube and you guys voted  many of you said please i want to see a full review and i want to do a full review anyway  because i was blown away by the first sniff but we’ll just leave it at that if you want to learn  all about the new salvatore ferragamo ud por um be sure to stay tuned because the review is up next  welcome back to another fragrance review today it’s all about the new salvatore ferragamo  por on ud or ud porom which was released last year sometime mid last year mostly in europe in  the middle eastern market it really didn’t make it here to the u.s it was really under the radar you  know which is one thing that i love to do is blind by myself i know it’s not something i condone  because you can always it can always backfire but this was a pleasantly a great surprise that i did  with my first unboxing first impressions i have the dried down here on a piece of paper but before  we get into the scent itself let’s talk about the presentation it’s really really nice you have this  golden slash copper you know embellishments here in this black box which has also some nice cool  tri-ball slash flowers i don’t know if you can capture that on camera or not but it’s a really  well made box really nice you know bottle as well i love the contour here which is really cool  it’s got this nice you know twist and turn shape sabatore ferragamo at the top also embossed on the  glass itself uh the cap is heavy plastic it’s not metal it’s not magnetic the sprayers are actually  pretty good you get a nice distribution and descent we’ll even talk about the scent very soon  the great thing about this of course was maybe an exclusive to the middle eastern market it’s an ood  fragrance if you will didn’t quite make stores here saboteur ferragamo it’s not really a brand  that normal or regular general stores do carry but and it smells so good i can’t wait to talk about  the scent with you guys you can actually find this at fragrance by dot state for heavily discounted  i think the retail for this was about 150 130 msrp but you can find this fragrance for about  less than 50 right now they still have it in stock by the time i’m filming this  um i don’t know in the next couple days if it’s still going to be available but right now as  of the time i’m shooting this which is early november this still available at the website  for under 50 bucks so i’ll have the link below if you guys want to check it out there’s also a sale  going on right now fragrance by commemorating their um anniversary sale i don’t know by the  time i’m actually posting this video if the sale is still going to be up but enough of  that let’s get into the scent itself so let’s talk about the scent itself i have it on this  test strip right here the dry down it is my scent of the day i will do a quick spray here as always  talk about the opening and my god this opening is bold it’s brash it’s bodacious it’s one of those  fragrances that at hello it’s definitely going to scream quality this could have  easily been a niche fragrance if this was bottled by let’s say tom ford private blend  and they would ask 300 bucks for a 50 mil all of us will probably pay happily because this stuff is  just amazing it smells just so good it starts off sweet and spicy so you’re going to have a  ton of spices going on here there’s definitely a booziness going on which is like a cognac slash  rum kind of a cord which is really boozy really um just captivating right up top that booziness here  will stay throughout the scent until about midway point once you get into the heart of the fragrance  that booziness from the cognac slash rum is going to fade away to make room for the leather  uh the spices will come to play which will become a little drier of a fragrance  uh the food is just going to peak its hat it’s not really a predominant food  even though it’s called por um i don’t even listed as a note i do get a tiny bit of a  little bit animalic slash smokey food facet in the fragrance but it’s ever so slight ever so smooth  ever so in the background the most predominant feel here it’s going to be this animalic leathery  feel if you guys are familiar with bellamy you know the classic incredible air mass fragrance  bellamy the original this has a very uncanny familiarity with that fragrance so if you like  fragrances of old you know classic traditional timeless classics you’re going to really enjoy  this especially with the modern twists and turns that they add here i love the lather here i love  the booziness the cognac the rum the spices and the tobacco there’s also a really really nice  tobacco i love tobacco especially full in winter i think it’s perfect for tobacco and this is a  gorgeous combination of leather tobacco and spices when you get into like 35 minutes or so right into  the heart of the fragrance it takes a little turn again it goes from the boozy sweetness that  you get from the beginning into this dry leather tobacco spicy woodsy kind of a dry down which is  really good in my opinion this is what you get now from the heart which is going to be  what is going to stay throughout the remaining life of the fragrance which is actually  quite good we’ll get to performance in a second but i love what i get from the beginning and i  love that transition from that boozy sweet uh creamy fast that turns into this dry  almost rough and tumble leather kind of a feel dark spicy bold you know i think you need to like  fragrances of old that has that traditional that timeless beautiful leather facet that i love which  is almost animalic and kind of rough and not for everyone but it also adds this nice creaminess  which is quite modern almost like a honey accord with that tobacco which gives the  fragrance a nice modern feel so don’t think that this is going to be aged because it has  a perfect combination perfect balance like i said before this would have been a great niche release  and i have to tip my hat off to salvatore ferragamo for putting such qualities so  in the heart it’s going to be mostly that spicy leather dry facet that i get in this fragrance as  you get to the dry down about 40 minutes into the fragrance this is where it’s going to be magical  because on top of the lather and top of the spice there’s a little bit of an ooh that i get  the leather will be enhanced by two things benzoin which you guys know benzoin has this vanilla  kind of a vibe which is also a little bit resinous and very creamy and also has a white wood presence  that adds this nice suppleness this nice soothing and and smooth um you know round to the fragrance  so it really dries down incredible you’re going to have the lather the tobacco with a little bit  of hint of the wood that i talked about the spices it is rather dry but you do have a smooth creamy  component added by the benzoin and the guayaq wood so all in all a great fragrance from beginning to  end just very enjoyable great for the seasons we have going right now i think this is great for  date scenarios i think this is more fitting for evening wear and dressier occasions but i most  definitely think that you can pull this off during the day for the office i think this would be great  for meetings if you’re a ceo type of guy or if you’re somebody who wants to convey  a very well-rounded vibe about yourself that you’re somebody who knows where you’re going  knows what you want i think this is like a boss ceo type of a vibe type of ascent this is a  attention commanding fragrance if i had to say you know the perfect way to describe this is a  fragrance that will turn heads as you walk into a room it’ll leave a tremendous siage if you want a  fragrance that projects really well for the first couple hours and leaves a great ciash this will  be a great one now as far as the performance as we talking about that i think it is great when  it comes to the projection it pushes really nice for the first hour and a half two hours  leaves an incredible siege especially if you spray your clothes but as far as the longevity  itself on skin i got about seven to eight hours at the most um if it was really cold out i had to  really go crazy on the sprayers meaning i had to do four to six sprays if i did about three to four  it would be around the six hour mark which is really not bad i mean if you spray your clothes  you’re gonna get that tremendous size that i talked about so performance is definitely above  average and for a fragrance of this quality of this you know kind of scent profile just below  50 i think it’s a complete steal if you have a taste like mine if this all sounds interesting to  you i think it’s definitely a great pickup a lot of people when i did the first impression asked me  hey max is this a safe blind buy i don’t think any blind bites are safe no difference here but if you  have a taste like mine and if everything i talked about in this video sounds interesting to you  this would be a great pick up a great addition to your fragrance wardrobe especially at this  time of year if you’re looking for a great fall slash winter fragrance to rock for the  next few months i know i will definitely one of my favorites from salvatore ferragamo a total  hidden gem and one that you can most definitely expect to see in my top videos in the upcoming  seasons for the next few months definitely make some top videos for sure this stuff here is fire  three words that are used to summarize sabatore fergamo por om ud or wood peron this is leathery  it’s spicy and it’s warm so if you like those kind of fragrances this is definitely a must try  so my final assessment for salvatore ferragamoud prom this is a great release from 2019-2020 um  it’s a shame that fragrances like this and here’s another one too guys if you like  noir umbra from esimiaki you’re gonna love this because they share a lot of the similar  uh spicy components a lot of creaminess some ambree facets so if you like that fragrance  this is a great one to check out and again going back to what i was saying i think it’s a shame  that fragrances like this remain under the radar unless we bring it forth once we talked about it  kind of hard to find them in in the u.s especially i think they stay you know close to the european  market the middle eastern market and this is the stuff i love to see from the designer house  kudos to salvatore ferragamo which i put it right up there with isimiyaki and right up  there with cafe i think they’re always giving us some really daring and unique fragrances that what’s happening is that the reality of what’s happening over there where are you cropping can you crop above my head I’m a mysterious so like we’ve interviewed cell from a great height top of my head I’m Xing Xing and today broadly meet Stella McCartney I’ve come to Harrods to meet with Stella she’s launching a new area in one of the world’s most luxurious department stores she’s an outspoken fashion designer and daughter of a pretty famous rock star interning with Christian Lacroix aged 15 and heading up French brand Chloe by the age of 25 it has been a pretty charmed rise the other fashion ranks and she now runs her own label she’s a child of two celebrity vegetarians her mother Linda was a staunch animal rights activist and creator of the world’s most famous vegetarian sausage this has had an impact on her entire career and she’s not afraid to blast the fashion industry for the use of leather and fur and has even fronted videos for animal protection charity patter she’s brought a fresh perspective to fashion and design as blazed a trail in promoting ethical sustainable fashion I wanted to find out how she squares these principles with running a successful global business I’ll let you hide hey how are you miss Ct should I see you at the BRIT sister did seem Prince’s come out to a little redeye thing happening today I’m a huge fan of your bags because you look at them and you think yeah but it feels so soft and it feels so real yeah how much work goes into a bag like that oh my god I think it’s one of the most sort of intensive parts of the process for us from day one the manufacturer of it you have to just approach in a completely different way so we make all of our accessories in Italy and the finest factories but in the places that make leather do you meet a lot of resistance from people who are like wouldn’t it be 100 times easy if you just went and used leather you know I think you know I was – oh it’s funny I had a CEO who said to me well you know you’ll never have an accessories business right he’s like you know and I was that huh really I’m Jagga didn’t really think that was the case actually if you look at the big fashion houses they really only sell bags or shoes you know there actually is very little ready-to-wear in their stores our accessories business has just been growing and growing and we’ve got a hit bag the Falabella I know it seems so self-evident to you now but talk me through why you decided to take an ante leather anti-fur stands from an early age I was encouraged to be a little bit more sympathetic to our fellow creatures I didn’t even have to think about it was just like if I go in whatever cure I go into of course I’m not gonna kill animals in the process it’s actually our point of difference weirdly enough you know I was ridiculed for many many many years what do you mean by ridicule I find you know where people so kind of dismissive I just think it’s anything different in an industry you kind of normally made to feel a bit ridiculous and also people you know they’re they don’t like um they don’t always like people that are different do they yeah Sabrina so I know you designed some faux fur and I saw that in your autumn winter collection last year do you not think that designing stuff that looks like fur and behaves like fur do you not think that encourages to use you know actual fur I thought about that a lot you know the pieces of fate for I was seeing they were so lifelike that I was like I don’t want to use this stuff because it looks like real fur and people are gonna think real furs acceptable so I created a label called furfrou fur so that you could see it wasn’t real fur and actually in my mind if you see that in the street you’re gonna go that looks like fur that’ll keep me as warm as fur and fur feels really wrong so I’m gonna get that instead I think that the fashions do you can get away with a lot and it is getting away with murder fur is the most unnecessary thing in the world that those animals aren’t eaten if they try and pretend that the fashion industry animals are a by-product which by the way they are not they are bred to be killed been made into bags the fashion she is supposed to be modern and I think that working the same material for thousands and thousands of years when it’s not environmentally friendly and it’s not needed I think it’s really old-fashioned I like you lot oh bloody solving my head what is that Yuri and I won oh right yeah I fell asleep with that in my head anyway let’s go come on let’s go we could all hang out tonight I wanted to just kind of take it back and ask you did your parents expect you to go into fashion at all well I was pretty kind of adamant that I was gonna do it quite early on so by the time you got to Sint Maartens and you did a graduate show and you had Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell modeling for you which is amazing which is very unusual it feels like so long ago Matt yeah I did didn’t I mother they were my friends we were hanging out in London with they still are my friends and I was kind of in this situation I was like I’ve got a graduate show and I’ve got to get models and you’re all my mates I’m hanging out with you 24/7 and is it weird that I don’t ask you or I know I’m gonna get killed if I ask you but do I care if I get killed and anyone else in my college if they could get Kate Moss to model in it they’d ask em you know damn I think they’d jump at the chance so I kind of mulled it over and then I just thought yeah I think it just happened that I had a very famous set of parents which didn’t particularly go down well has that been more of a hindrance when you were starting out for instance was that more of an obstacle for you to overcome no you know I think about that a lot it’s been with me my entire life and it didn’t sit very well with me great you know when I was younger I mean it’s one of the reasons I went into fashion because I didn’t want to be put into a box and kind of be judged I think you can be the kid of a famous person or a very successful person or a wealthy person and you can work and that’s great you know or you could not work right yeah you were never gonna be the kind of person who sort of lives on a tropical island and that’s it now that sounds quite good no no right Inc of it right before Paris fashion yeah I might just go to Japan so you were only 25 when you were appointed the head of Chloe and that must have been an enormous amount pressure for a young woman how did you deal with that you know I think I dealt with it in a way that I kind of had that wonderful naivety of being 25 honestly I was like I’ll just nip to Paris work at this place for a little bit then I’ll you know come back would you say that was the biggest risk you’ve taken as a designer just like leaving the label that you started and then going over to Chloe no I don’t think I think there’s been many risks I mean I think I’m yeah I’m full of risks I mean leaving Chloe was more risky yeah then leaving my brand because Chloe was doing great you know I was leaving a major hit and then I was coming back and starting the brand that you know that maybe was not going to be a major hit one of the big executives there he said well you know name me one brand that has a woman designing for it that has a global success like naming one as if to kind of scare me out of my decision to leave them is it just kind of just say okay well good luck you’re gonna fail because you’re a woman that’s actually and you’re British she was like in an immune British brand I think Anna Wintour she said once that you were significant as a female fashion designer because there were so few female fashion designers working on a luxury level is it still the case there you know do you still feel like it’s a man’s world when it comes to luxury design I mean you know I like to think it’s it’s less the case I think that it’s quite hot to be a woman designing now for women I think people see that there’s a connection there and it makes sense like wow that would took a long time to figure out you know I think at the end of the day if you’re good you shouldn’t be sort of judged on your sex you should be judged on your work and in terms of you know other stuff we’ve done outside of Stella McCartney the house you’ve done loads of things you’ve done D dhis you’ve designed the uniforms for Team GB for the Olympics so how important is it to you that you have all these fingers in different pies so to speak the the added us that came about because I love sportswear I love the sort of technical side and I love that I can’t do that in my ready-to-wear I don’t have access to those materials to that kind of extraordinary athletic technology that just feels right you know I’m also a woman that exercises and I really at the time was over eleven years ago or something women’s athletic wear was absolutely rubbish you know rubbish with a capital R and men’s was great I was slightly offended you know doing lingerie I wear lingerie I really feel strongly about lingerie for women being you know technically amazing the fit being amazing yeah I think the unique thing about your designs that you design for women in real situations you don’t just design for say women who are size zero and come from Eastern Europe is that fair to say yeah I mean I think the most important thing for me is to serve women that’s what I do that’s my job and I’m not ashamed to say I’m very proud to say it so at the end of the day I want all women of
